Mobile crane used in daring auto heist!
One of our telehandlers recently found itself involved in a highway drama in which a truck load of luxury cars was stolen.
Well, kind of. Actually it was all part of a TV advert being shot for Audi in Johannesburg. The script required that a truck carrying the cars be lifted into the air by hijackers in a helicopter. To film the scene, they needed something to pick the truck off the ground and make it appear like it was flying. And that’s when they called us.
We sent a Manitou MRT 2150 up to Johannesburg for the shoot, which involved closing off an entire road while filming was underway. The photos below give an idea of how we did it. Then take a look at the finished advert below the slideshow – quite amazing what they can do with special effects!

And here’s the advert. The bad guys get bust in the end, demonstrating how the Audi tracking system lets your car be found wherever it is.
